This photo is of the prototype during the
earlier phases of construction.
January 25,2009 3.5hrs - 488.5 total.
Finished laying out and tracing all 1/2" bulkhead
pieces. Rough cut then sanded to shape. Cut
and sanded all notches. Need to drill a couple of
3/16" holes and finish hand sanding all pieces
then I can start on the joint plates to join all
the fuselage bulkhead halves together.
January 26, 2009 1.5hrs - 490.0 total. Drilled
remaining holes in 1/2" pieces. Cleaned up
jig/table to make room to layout bulkheads.
Started making joint plates.
January 27,2009 0.5hrs - 490.5 total. Made
a couple more joint plates.
January 28, 2009 4.0hrs - 494.5 total.
Finished rough cutting all joint plates. Found
two bulkhead pieces missing a couple of
lightening holes and notches. Drilled the holes
and pilot holes for the notches.
January 29, 2009 3.0hrs - 497.5 total. Cut out the notches I started yesterday. Hand sanded all
the bulkhead and diaphragm pieces that had not been sanded before (most of them). Found a
couple more holes that needed to be drilled and some cutouts that needed to be shaped and
sanded. Finished them all up. Am ready to start glueing the bulkhead halves together using the joint
January 31, 2009 5.5hrs - 503.0 total. Reviewed the plans on assembling the bulkheads, stringers,
formers, diaphragms, etc. Found one of the diaphraghms needed to have a couple of notches cut -
did that. Cleared the jig table off and laid out all the two part bulkheads and dry fir the joint plates
including all needed clamps and clamping blocks. Set up wax paper where needed. Glued all the two
part bulkheads together with the joint plates. Also glued the reinforcing and spacer plates onto
BH-22 and 21 as needed. This is the first assembly I've done on the aircraft since finishing the tail in
August, and the first on the fuselage at all.
|Bulkhead joint plates being glued. They are rough cut to shape and will
be sanded to match the profile of the bulkheads once the epoxy cures.
February 1, 2009 3.0hrs - 506.0 total. Removed clamps from bulkheads. Sanded down joint plates and external
profile of stiffner and backing plates. Will sand down the interior sides of the notches for top and bottom longerons
to fit 1"X1" stringer before putting them in the jig. These notches should be fairly straight forward and not have any
custom angles that need to be matched on the sides, however the bottom of the notches will need to be sanded to
match the angle of the longeron before being glued.
February 2, 2009 3.5hrs - 509.5 total. Marked and sanded down the top and bottom notches on all the bulkheads
to fit 1X1 longeron pieces. Some of the notches are just a little deep causing the stringers to fit too far down in the
notch so that no materail will be left protruding to be sanded to match the bulkhead profile. I'll need to make the
stringers about 1X1 1/4 to give some extra material where needed. Looks like I'm finally ready to start putting the jig
together. Also need to go buy some longeron material and rip the stringers.
February 3, 2009 4.5hrs - 514 total. Re-levelled jig table. Mounted vertical rail supports to table and levelled.
Clamped one of the rails and a piece of cross bracing in place for the photo below.
